Campaigns and Issues:
New regional governance arrangements
As part of the Sub-National Review of Economic Development and Regeneration, the Government has proposed to abolish Regional Assemblies, giving regional powers over planning, transport and housing to the Regional Development Agency.
The Review is worryingly focused exclusively on narrowly-conceived economic growth to the virtual exclusion of social and environmental concerns. It also fails to incorporate rural considerations, and implies that the partnerships that have been developed between the Regional Assembly and wider social, economic and environmental partners will be downgraded.
This would deny stakeholders such as CPRE the ability to contribute meaningfully to the development of regional policy and decision making, and narrow the range of experience and expertise that regional policy makers are able to draw on.
